Abstract
Purpose:
To describe a case of a subconjunctival mycetoma that developed after a patient received a sub-Tenon's injection of triamcinolone acetonide.
Methods:
Case report.
Results:
A 76-year-old white male presented with a subconjunctival mass in the area of a previous posterior sub-Tenon's corticosteroid injection for wet age-related macular degeneration. Microbiologic and pathologic analysis of the mass revealed the causative organism to be the pigmented fungus Exophiala jeanselmei.
Conclusion:
This is the first published case of an Exophiala-associated subconjunctival mycetoma.
