Intraocular intrusion of suture material that was used as scleral buckling material

Retin Cases Brief Rep. 2014 Summer;8(3):227-9. doi: 10.1097/ICB.0000000000000050.

Abstract

Purpose: To report intrusion of encircling suture used for scleral buckling 20 years ago.

Methods: Observational case report of a patient who admitted with the complaint of floaters. The patient had surgery for retinal detachment 20 years ago. Fundus examination revealed an encircling suture material. In some locations, the encircling suture had eroded all the way through the sclera to the vitreous cavity. In these locations, it was passing through the vitreous cavity. There was no retinal detachment, inflammation, or hemorrhage.

Results: Prophylactic argon laser photocoagulation was performed. No complication occurred during 1-year follow-up.

Conclusion: A conservative approach with close follow-up may be suitable in case of an intrusion of suture material if there are no accompanying complications.
