Weaning gives β cells license to regenerate

Dev Cell. 2015 Mar 9;32(5):531-2. doi: 10.1016/j.devcel.2015.02.016.

Abstract

Pancreatic beta cell proliferation is high at birth and then rapidly declines. In this issue of Developmental Cell,Stolovich-Rain et al. (2015) show that β cells' capacity to increase proliferation in response to injury is unexpectedly not acquired until after weaning-related nutritional changes trigger a metabolic and regenerative competence program.
