Am J Surg. 2020 Dec;220(6):1536-1538. doi: 10.1016/j.amjsurg.2020.07.006. Epub 2020 Jul 14.

Abstract

  1. Underrepresented and first-generation students are more at risk of social isolation during the pandemic which limits academic progress.

  2. Intentional outreach from surgical leadership is necessary to promote inclusivity in surgery during a virtual age.

  3. The establishment of structured virtual communities in each subspecialty will foster equitable access to mentors for those who need it most.
