The influence of water impurities caused by 3d-block metal ion dissolution on proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis was investigated. While Co2+ and Ni2+ significantly decreased membrane conductivity, MnO4- anions exhibited a negligible effect. As MnO4- had low affinity for perfluorosulfonic acid in the PEM, Mn oxides materials have promising potential for use in PEM water electrolyzers.
